Viagra increases risk of hearing loss
Men who take Viagra could be at an increased risk for long-term hearing loss, a new study suggests.
The results show that, among 11,525 men over age 40, those who took Viagra or other drugs that act in a similar manner, called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE-5i), were twice as likely to also report hearing loss as were men who had not used the drugs.
The findings suggest that the current government warning regarding hearing loss and the use of PDE-5i medications, which include Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, is warranted, said study researcher Gerald McGwin, a professor of epidemiology in the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health.
So this is a perplexing tradeoff for the typical male with ED. Improved sex life or greater risk of hearing loss? For those who do have hearing loss and are looking for an aphrodisiac in place of Viagra or other male enhancers consider effective communication. Listen....the best aphrodisiac in the world is effective communication. When you can listen to another person and respond to that person as a unique individual, you affirm their existence. When you affirm your significant other's existence this facilitates intimacy. You might say then that modern hearing aids are Viagra for the ears!
If you are involved in a conversation for more than four hours with your significant other this is good and there is no need to seek medical attention.

Aug 12, 2010 at 9:56 PM This is something serious considering that the use of such stimulants and the rate of progressive, hearing loss is more common among those who are in the higher age group. You are right when you question about trading your ear's hearing capacity for a few moments of ecstasy but I guess, the bigger problem is whether this finding has been made public knowledge in an adequate manner so that they can at least make a more informed decision.
Aug 28, 2010 at 3:35 PM I think your comment is interesting, but perhaps a little harsh for some. It's true that some use these for recreational purposes, but there are many who this has opened up doors for intimacy and reducing feelings of anxiety, particularly where there are physical problems. When I'm evaluating someones hearing loss, there's always teaching opportunities and I often mention that as an example of how we can do things and not realize the risk to our hearing. It has always gone smoothly and without going weird. Not once has the person been aware of these findings.
