Summer Soccer: A Win for Hearing Health

GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!

The sounds of the 2026 Men’s World Cup are nearly upon us. Taking place across three countries and beginning June 11, the World Cup will bring together the best of the best from 48 countries to compete for the ultimate title of World Cup Champions.

If you’re one of the millions of people planning to attend or view the World Cup, there are a few things to remember to protect your hearing. Although the days of widespread vuvuzela use are behind us (notable for their sound exceeding 120 decibels – similar to the volume of a firecracker!), crowd noise, cheering, and other noisemaking can be enough to still cause damage.

It’s an innovative time not only for hearing aids and hearing technology, but options continue to evolve for hearing protection. From foam plugs to sophisticated earmuffs, there is an option at every price point and style to fit your gameday needs. Signs that the noise might be too loud include needing to shout to be heard, if you experience pain, or are left with ringing or buzzing in the ears. If you experience these symptoms, take a listening break and consider some type of noise protection. Remember, the only completely preventable form of hearing loss is noise-induced hearing loss. Taking a few simple steps to protect your hearing can keep you engaged and cheering for years to come.

If you wear hearing aids, be sure to charge up or take extra batteries with you when attending a game or hitting up a viewing party. If it’s going to be noisy wherever you’re watching from, explore hearing aid programs that you may have in your smartphone app to help improve listening in crowded spaces. If you can’t attend the games, you may even be able to discreetly stream the game’s audio from your smartphone to your hearing aids using Bluetooth technology! If attending in person, keep in mind that some stadiums are outdoors. Excessive heat and moisture can harm hearing aids, so consider packing a drying kit (learn more here) to keep your devices in top condition.
